It’s funny that though students spend ninety percent of their time for four straight years in high school, they rarely have any clue the history their high school holds. Though placed in a smaller town, Pasadena High School holds a lot of history that may intrigue the students of today. So, take a walk through the history of a school and the trials it faced
On September 19, 1874, Pasadena High School elected its first school board and a week later opened its doors to students; well sixteen students to be exact. Four years later, the High school was given its names as Pasadena, and twelve students graduated. By 1893 just twenty years after opening its doors, there were already one-hundred and twenty- three students. If you think about the time period of the eighteen hundreds, that was very good considering most were not put through high school as they were to begin working for family businesses.
Before the school knew what happened, it was the nineteen hundreds; the years of protests, riots, and freedom. Pasadena had many firsts including a visit by Roosevelt (the president at the time), debate club, school newspapers, and football. By 1920, there were more than three thousand students and three-hundred and fifty graduates. In such a short time, Pasadena School grew from merely sixteen to three thousand. Because students attending Pasadena typically were going to attend college, Pasadena turned into a college, then back into a High School.
Today, Pasadena has more than four thousand students, and offers various unique programs for students. These programs include the following:
- The Graphic Communications Academy- Established in partnership with printing Industry of Southern California and Pasadena City College.
- The Visual Arts and Design Academy- Linked with the Art Center College of Design
- Pasadena City College-Offering students the chance to go to college close to home
- Pasadena Art Armory- For the art inside the student
- The Center for Independent Study program- Designed as a remedial program to help students who are behind in their credits to graduate.
Through the Civil War, the protests, the riots, and the insanity of the twenty first century, the Pasadena High school stands proudly for all to see. It has progressed with time and is a historical monument for education everywhere.
